Local HIVES. global insight.

Beedens Brook's hives are located in beautiful Somerset County, New Jersey. Despite their bucolic surroundings, bees have it tough—they're exposed daily to parasites, insecticides, dwindling food resources, and changing environmental conditions.

In order to ensure that our bee colonies have what they need to survive and thrive year round, we choose our sites carefully and limit the number of colonies at each site to maintain a healthy foraging density. In addition, we always leave more honey on the hives than the bees require, as insurance against unforeseen events.

Sustainability is at the core of our beekeeping philosophy. We keep up with the latest scientific research and hive management practices to help our bees navigate these modern challenges. Our mission is to care for our hives so the bees can live to forage another day.

The honey is a sweet bonus.

BEEKEEPING IS IN OUR BLOOD. SERIOUSLY.

Scott started small, with a just few hives to pollinate his backyard garden. That first year, his career was almost over before it started when he experienced the trade's #1 occupational hazard—a bee sting. That event landed him in the emergency room with a rash and swelling tongue. Upon learning that Scott was a beekeeper, the well-intentioned doctor tending him admonished that he "obviously should not keep bees!"

Fortunately, Scott ignored the good doctor's advice. Over the years he began tending hives on several local farms, using his scientific background to research best practices to keep honey yields high and the hives thriving. Now, many years and countless stings later, Scott has developed the necessary tolerance, and stings rarely pose more than a temporary nuisance—more than a fair price to pay for Beedens Brook's golden harvest.
